The Reading Outreach Tutoring Program

The mission of the Reading Outreach Tutoring Program is to train volunteer tutors to provide a 1-on-1 structured reading intervention to struggling readers in New Kensington, PA and surrounding communities, thus providing access to high-quality instruction to all students, regardless of socio-economic status.

The Reading Outreach Initiative is organized exclusively for educational purposes and motivated by the belief that providing access to high-quality reading help to all is a means of serving as a transforming touch of God in the world.

Volunteers Needed for Fall 2024

Would you like to make a difference in the life of a struggling reader?

Join us on Tuesdays after school (4 – 5:15  p.m.)

We are currently looking for volunteers to commit to serving 1 day a week after school. This year we are partnering with Sonward Youth Program’s after-school program in New Kensington, PA. You will be assigned your own student, and meet with them in-person on Tuesdays at the Sonward Youth Program’s center at 601 6th Street, New Kensington.

Work 1-on-1 with a student, providing reading instruction and help. All training and materials are provided. Volunteers and students will be guided and supported through lessons as you learn. You don’t need to be a teacher.

There will be a training on Tuesday, October 1st which will be followed by the start of tutoring on Tuesday, October 8th. Email coordinator Janet Smith at: ReadingOutreach601@gmail.com for more information.
